Falling In Love With Art: Part 4

A Gorey Dali...
This week I was busy and out of town, so I'm not as organized as I'd hoped to be.
With Halloween coming up next week, I thought I'd highlight two artists that have a bit more macabre style.  Both of these artists have inspired me over the years, with their very interesting perspectives.

Edward Gorey was an illustrator, writer, an amazing artist.  His style and sense of humor was a bit twisted, which is what I love about him.  I first fell in love with his art when I would watch the PBS Mystery Theatre.

He wrote and illustrated over 100 books.  He was brilliant and very talented.

“Life is intrinsically, well, boring and dangerous at the same time. At any given moment the floor may open up. Of course, it almost never does; that's what makes it so boring. ”
― Edward Gorey

Salvador Dali:  Was multi-talented in painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, writing and film.  His art work was interesting, surreal, bizarre, beautiful...I could go on, but instead I will just show you.

I have always loved this picture, as I'm sure many others do too.  Melting clocks, very cool.

A sample of his brilliance.

He was also great with optical illusions.
I happened upon his art when I was about 15 years old and fell in love with his bizarre style.  It was very inspiring to see someone who could truly think outside the box.
Thank you for popping by.  Have a happy week!

  1. Confession: I find Dali's work to be creepy. But interestingly, I like John Jude Palencar's work.

  2. Twisted: exactly how I like my art. (I'm sure that comes as quite the surprise.) I, too, first saw Gorey's work on Mystery, before episodes of Poirot and his little gray cells. Dali, on the other hand -- or on what looks kind of like a hand, but melted -- is my dad's favorite artist, so I've known his stuff since my formative years... which now that I think about it, explains a lot.

  3. Love Dali. Truly creative and saw the world through different eyes. I did not realize how many works were from Gorey.

  4. Love Gorey. Dali, not so much. Although I do appreciate his art it's not my personal favorite - have to be in the mood for it. Great Halloween/art post! Thanks for stopping by my blog too - it means allot!

  7. Rebecca, I think a lot of people find Dali to be a bit creepy and some of it is, but it's also really interesting and unique. :)

Nate, haha, not at all surprised. Twisted, suits you! :)

Julie, yes, Gorey did A LOT, in his lifetime. He was pretty amazing and very funny.

Jessi, it's funny, everyone seems to love one or the other. I thought they were both inspiring in their own unique ways. It's good to see you again.

MLC, Indeed, Gorey created a whole wonderful world.

Daniele, thank you! I enjoy the surreal and interesting arts, too. :)

  8. Heather, it always amazes me how much connects us. I have always liked Gorey without knowing who he was, and Dali was the first art print I ever bought on my own.

  9. Dali was an incredible surrealist. Loved the way he really pushed the envelope.
Like Julie above, I was unaware of the extent of Gorey's work.

Thank you so much for sharing these pics. I love what you bring to the table.

And what Halloween could go by without mentioning Edvard Munch's "Scream?"

    Hope things are well!

  10. I remember the seeing Gorey's work on PBS and finding it whimsically dark, but like Ikramer14, I did not know anything about him, thanks for sharing that clip. Dali on the other hand I do know, I've always found his work fascinating. Frieda Kalo was another artist who dared to visit that dark side of herself. I'm very drawn to this kind of work, though I have a very difficult time allowing myself to go there.
